What motivates you?

Part of being a personal trainer is motivating clients.  I think this is the hardest part of training someone.  No one can make you do something you don't want to do.

There are two different types of motivation:  Intrinsic and extrinsic.  Extrinsic are externally motivating, things like competing in a sport for a trophy, or working out to look a certain way.  There is nothing wrong with these type of motivations as long as they are kept in check.  Sometimes they are a good way to get started on a good habit.  The problem is maintaining this motivation for the long term.

Intrinsic are internally motivating, such as doing things for the pure enjoyment of the thing you do. Do you enjoy baking for the challenge of it?  Does the voice in your head say "You got this"?

Most of us are motivated by a combination of both types.  I grew up playing football and riding horses.  When I was in high school, I enjoyed competing in both and winning trophies in both.  The pursuit of trophies was not the only reason for doing them.  Mainly it was my love for both sports.  The trophies made me work hard to improve.

For you, as a client, what motivates you?  Do you like someone that believes in you and motivates you by saying you can do it?  Or do you like someone that gets inches from you and yells "move it"?  Are you motivated to loose weight because you will look like an A & F model?  Or because losing weight will improve your health by lowering your risk of a heart attack, risk of diabetes, lower stress, and improve blood pressure.

Do you get motivated by quoting someone?  Or a video of someone making a motivational speech?  Do you get motivated by the process you go through?   Or by simply getting to the end goal?

Please leave a comment in the comment section and let me know what motivates you, what drives you to succeed in reaching your goals.

To your health and fitness,
RH Wells
